A Red CSCS card is a temporary card for people working in or entering the construction industry while they complete the training or qualification needed for the correct skilled CSCS card. It is available to trainees, apprentices, experienced workers, and some technical, supervisory or management staff who are registered on an approved construction-related qualification, such as an NVQ. Applicants can apply for this card as soon as they are registered on a course, without having to wait until the qualification is completed, and will usually need to pass the relevant CITB Health, Safety and Environment test. The card shows employers and site managers that the holder is working towards recognised occupational competence and has the basic health and safety knowledge required for site access. Red CSCS cards are commonly used by labourers, tradespeople, plant operatives, apprentices, supervisors and other site-based construction roles, and are intended as a route towards the appropriate skilled card once the qualification is complete..
